2023 Student-Athlete Excellence Banquet: Betsy Schumacker Woman Athlete of the Year Award Nominees

The Betsy Schumacker Woman Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually for excellence in athletic competition by a female undergraduate. The winner of the award will be announced on May 17, 2023 at the annual Student-Athlete Excellence Banquet.

KATE AUGUSTYN - SWIMMING AND DIVING

As only a sophomore, Kate Augustyn is writing her name in the MIT Swimming & Diving history books as one of the most decorated swimmers in program history. After a historic first year, Kate continues to get faster and faster. At the 2023 NEWMAC Championships Kate was a 7-time NEWMAC Champion and was named the NEWMAC Female Swimmer of the Year. She broke her own 200 backstroke NEWMAC record and also broke the 100 backstroke and 400 IM NEWMAC records. She was also the lead off member of the winning 800 Freestyle Relay that set a new NEWMAC record by over 3 seconds. She went on to earn 7 NCAA All-American honors at the 2023 NCAA Championships and helped lead our women’s team to an 8th place overall finish. This puts Kate at 13 NCAA All-Americans, 8 school records and 8 NEWMAC records during her career here so far.” - Meg Sisson French

JULIA HOWARTH - TRACK AND FIELD

FULL BIO

Julia had one of the best seasons ever for a middle-distance runner in MIT history. Not only did she place 5th in the 800m at the NCAA championships, she anchored our women's 4x400m relay to 6th place. Julia ran the 2nd best time in school history for the 800m. Julia also plays as a defender for the women's soccer team in the fall.- Riley Macon

SARAH PERTSEMLIDIS - TENNIS

“I'm proud to nominate senior captain Sarah Pertsemlidis for the Betsy Schumacker Woman Athlete of the Year Award. Sarah has had a phenomenal collegiate tennis career, playing at the top spot for most of her time at MIT. Although COVID cut her freshman and sophomore years from competition, she has made the most of the time that she has had to compete. In her junior year, she led her team to the NCAA Elite 8 as well as a #6 team ranking. Individually, she finished as a semi-finalist in the NCAA Singles tournament and All-American Status, Incredibly, she has achieved even more her senior year. She was a finalist in both the singles and doubles draw of the regional ITA tournament, which earned her a spot in the ITA Cup for the first time in program history, She went on to be a finalist in the ITA Cup, and was awarded the ITA Cup O'Hara Sportsmanship Award, an award given across all division. In the spring, she has led the team to an all time program high ranking of #3 in the country, as well as a 3rd place finish at the ITA Indoor National Team Tournament, also an all time program high.She is on track to qualify for the NCAA singles and doubles tournament, as well as lead her team to another historic finish at NCAAs! Sarah has accumulated 100 career wins, incredible given the fact that she has only had 2 seasons of play (most players don't get to 100 in 4 full seasons).” - Carol Matsuzaki
