The Lead: First year
Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) tied the game with 3:48 remaining in regulation and then scored the game-winning goal late in double overtime to help No. 23 MIT complete the comeback and defeat Vassar College, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Vassar got on the board in the 12
th minute and increased its advantage to 2-0 after 1:47 elapsed in the second quarter.
Â
- The Brewers had the upper hand in the third quarter as they had a 4-2 edge in penalty corners and a 3-2 margin in shots on goal, but the score remained unchanged.
Â
- MIT ended the shutout in the 50
th minute when sophomore
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) sent a ball to the right post as she was falling, and it was deflected by junior
Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.). Junior goalie
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) made a trio of saves down the stretch and then Tomovski scored off a feed from junior
Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) on a penalty corner with 3:48 left to play.
Â
- In the first overtime session both teams generated a shot, but they were wide of the cage.
Â
- In double overtime Vassar produced seven shots, five of which were saved by Duncan while another was blocked. On the Engineers' only attempt of the frame, Tomovski dribbled along the end line, took a few steps into the arc, and slipped the ball past the goalie and a defender into the left corner with 2:21 on the clock.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- First year goalie
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made two saves in the first half while Duncan finished out the game and collected 11 saves.
Â
- Vassar led the way in shots (24-14), shots on goal (15-7), and penalty corners (8-4).
Â
- This was the first meeting between both programs since 2009 and the fourth overall. With the Engineers' victory, the series is tied at 2-2.
Â
- This is the second time in program history MIT has played multiple double overtime games in a season. The last time it occurred was in 1994 and the Engineers lost both games.
