Sailing Highlights Weekend With Fifth Place Finish at the Open Atlantic Coast Tournament

The MIT sailing team competed in three regattas over the weekend, highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Open Atlantic Coast Tournament.

OPEN ATLANTIC COAST TOURNAMENT | New London, Conn. | 5th of 18
  • MIT totaled 175 total points over the weekend.
  • Graduate student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) led the 'A Division' boat to a third-place finish with 55 points. The won three races and posted six top-three finishes overall.
  • In the 'B Division' sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished in 10th with 120 points. They had four top-five places and finished strong with a fourth and second-place finish to end the weekend.

YALE WOMEN'S TROPHY | New Haven, Conn. | 11th of 15
  • The Engineers finished in 11th with 231 total points.
  • In the 'A Division' senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and sophomore Katherine Jankowski (Hillsborough, Calif.) finished with 99 points for ninth overall. They had five top-five finishes highlighted by a second-place finish.
  • First years Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey) and Christine Keedy Brown (Miami, Fla.) took 11th with 132 points and seven top-10 finishes.
 
OBERG TROPHY | Cambridge, Mass. | 6th of 18
  • MIT totaled 184 points across all three divisions during the weekend.
  • Senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) and senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) took seventh with 58 points. They posted four top-five finishes including one victory.
  • First year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Adé Larsen (Rye, N.Y.) took second in the 'B Division' with 27 points, just two behind Boston College for the win. They only finished outside the top-five once in eight races and had three victories.
  • First year Ryan Hoffman (Darien, Conn.), senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), first year Katelyn Battacharia (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), and first year Natalie Hatzigeorgiou (Sammamish, Wash.) finished 14th in the 'C Division' with 99 points.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Engineers wrap up the fall season next weekend with four regattas on the slate. MIT will compete at the Schell Trophy, the Urn Trophy, the Terrier Invite, and the Nickerson Trophy.
