Sailing Wraps Up Fall Season

The MIT sailing team concluded the fall portion of their season with four regattas over the weekend. The Engineers' week included two conference championships and a third-place finish at the Terrier Invite.

SCHELL TROPHY | New Haven, Conn. | 10th of 18
  • At the Open NEISA Conference Championship, MIT finished tenth with 216 points.
  • In the 'A Division' MIT finished ninth as graduate student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.), sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.), and first year Ryan Hoffman (Darien, Conn.) totaled 104 points. They totaled four top-five finishes in 13 races.
  • Sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) led the 'B Division' boat to a ninth-place finish with 112 points and eight top-10 finishes.

  • The Engineers took seventh at the Women's NEISA Fall Championship with 196 points.
  • Senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, Calif.), sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), and junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) finished with 104 points in the 'A Division' to take sixth. They had six top-five finishes and concluded the event with a third and fourth-place finish to help hold off Dartmouth.
  • Seniors Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) and Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the 'B Division' boat to a sixth-place finish with 92 points. They finished with five top-five finishes, four of which were third-place finishes.

  • The Engineers finished third overall with 49 points.
  • Sophomores Andy Yu (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and Adé Larsen (Rye, N.Y.) tied Brown for first in the 'A Division' with 21 points, however, the Bears took first based on the number of top finishes. MIT grabbed four top three places including one win in six races.
  • In the 'B Division' junior Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.) and senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished fifth with 28 points. They grabbed three top-three finishes in six races and opened the day with back-to-back second-place finishes.
