Sailing Wins Mrs. Hurst Bowl

The MIT sailing team won the Mrs. Hurst Bowl to cap a successful third weekend of the fall season. The Engineers 'B' Division captured the top spot at the Mrs. Hurt Bowl to help the Engineers earn the win.

MRS. HURST BOWL | Hanover, N.H. | 1st of 17
  • MIT won the event with 99 points as the Engineers held off a late charge by Yale, which finished second with 102 points.
  • The Engineers 'A' Division boat of senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge, Wash.) took fifth with 70 points. They had four top-three finishes including three-straight to end the event.
  • Seniors Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) and Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.) led the 'B' Division boat to victory with 29 points. They had three wins and finished in the top-five in all but one race.

  • The Engineers totaled 340 over the weekend at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy to finish 14th.
  • The 'A' Division boat of senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas), and first year Ryan Hoffman (Darien, Conn.) took 15th 190 points. The team captured two top-10 finishes.
  • In the 'B' Division, sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.), Hoffman, senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) finished in 13th with 150 points with six top-ten finishes including a win to open the action.  
HOOD TROPHY | Medford, Mass. | 12th and 17 of 20
  • The Engineers 1 boat finished in 12th with 259 points while the Engineers 2 boat took 17th with 362 points.
  • In the 'A' Division, sophomore Andy Yu (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and junior Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.) led the Engineers 1 boat to a 14th-place finish with 144 points, highlighted by a second and third place finish. Junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Katherine Jankowski (Hillsborough, Calif.) had the Engineers 2 Boat finish in 18th with 191 points. The won the fifth race of the event.
  • First year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Adé Larsen (Rye, N.Y.) took 10th in the 'B' Division for the Engineers 1 Boat with 115 points and nine top-10 finishes. First years Conrad Straden (Darien, Conn.), Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey), Christine Keedy Brown (Miami, Fla.), and Tamsin Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) steered the Engineers 2 Boat to 171 points for a 15th-place finish with four top-10 finishes. 
UP NEXT:
  • MIT has a full slate of racing next week with four regattas on the schedule. The Engineers will compete in the BU Invite and host the Smith Trophy on Saturday, September 28. They will also compete in at the Danmark Trophy and Women's ACC Round 1B which take place from Saturday, September 28 – Sunday, September 29.
