Following a fourth-place finish at the Women's ACC Round 1B, the MIT sailing team qualified for the ACC Finals which will be held Oct. 11-12. Additionally, the Engineers 1 Boat took second at the Smith Trophy.

SMITH TROPHY | Cambridge, Mass. | 2nd, 10th, 13th of 20

• The Engineers 1 Boat finished in second with 110 total points. The 'A' Division boat of first year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Katherine Jankowski (Hillsborough, Calif.) took third with 57 points. Sophomore Andy Yu (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and Janowski took third in the 'B Division' with 53 points. They earned seven top-five finishes including one win.
• The Engineers 2 boat earned a 10th-place finish with 189 points. Junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and first year Christine Keedy Brown (Miami, Fla.) finished eighth in the 'A' Division with 85 points and four top-five finishes. In the 'B' Division, first year Sophia Woodbury (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Adé Larsen (Rye, N.Y.) finished in 10th with 104 points.
• The Engineers 3 boat finished in 13th with 208 points. The 'A' Division boat with junior Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.), and first years Conrad Straden (Darien, Conn.), Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey) took 16th with 143 points and finished strong with a second-place finish in the last race. Straden, Basaraner, and Tamsin Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) took seventh in the 'B Division' with 65 points. They grabbed three top-five finishes.

WOMEN'S ACC ROUND 1B | Providence, R.I. | 4th of 17

• Needing to finish in the top nine to qualify for the ACC Championships, the Engineers took fourth with 129 points to qualify for the championship event in two weeks at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
• Senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), and senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) led the 'A' Division boat to a seventh-place finish with 73 points. They finished strong with a win and a second-place finish in the last two races on Sunday to secure a top-10 finish.
• The Engineers 'B Division' boat took third with senior Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), senior Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), and senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) handling the boat. They totaled 56 points with four wins.

DANMARK TROPHY | New London, Conn. | 14th of 20

• MIT finished 14th with 183 points. The Engineers tied with the University of Rhode Island but took 14th based on head-to-head tiebreaker.
• Graduate student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) led the 'A Division' boat to an 11th-place finish with 84 points and one victory.
• In the 'B Division' senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.), and senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) took 14th with 99 points and three top-10 finishes.

• MIT is back on the water next weekend with the Open ACC Round 1B in St. Mary's MD and the Stu Nelson Trophy in New London. Both races will take place from Saturday, October 5-Sunday, October 6.
