TAMPA, Fla. - The MIT sailing team opened the spring season at the University of South Florida Women's Team Race over the weekend where they placed second overall with a 9-2 record. The College of Charleston won the event with a 12-0 mark.
After the first day of racing, the Engineers sat in second with a 6-2 record with the only losses coming to the College of Charleston, which finished the day with an 8-0 record. Day two saw MIT grab three more wins before the remainder of the event was abandoned due to the lack of wind. The Engineers finished with a 5-1 record in round 1 and a 4-1 record in round two.
Skippers for the Engineers were junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.), senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), first year Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey), and first year Sophia Woodbury (Sarasota, Fla). The Crew was made up of sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Woodbury, senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), and senior Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.)
