Sailing Wraps Up Regular Season

The MIT sailing team wrapped up the regular season at four regattas including two conference championship races.  

NEISA WOMEN'S FLEET RACE CHAMPIONSHIP | NEW HAVEN, Conn. | 13th of 17 

  • MIT finished in 13th overall with a total of 70 points. 
  • Senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished with 31 points in the 'A' Division to take 11th. 
  • Junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) earned a 14th place finish in the 'B' Division with 39 points.  

OPEN NEW ENGLAND FLEET RACE CHAMPIONSHIP | PROVIDENCE, R.I. | 6th of 17 

  • The Engineers finished the two-day event with 169 total points to finish sixth overall. 
  • Grad student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.), sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.), and first year Ryan Hoffman (Darien, Conn.) took eighth in the 'A' Division with 88 points. The team posted four top three finishes including a win in the final event.  
  • First year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.), senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), sophomore Adé Larsen (Rye, N.Y.), and senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) took sixth in the 'B' Division with 81 points. They finished in the top five on five occasions including one win.  

MORRIS FLEET RACE | BOSTON, Mass. | 7th of 13 

  • MIT took seventh overall in the race with 86 points. 
  • Junior Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.) and Natalie Hatzigeorgiou (Sammamish, Wash.) finished ninth in the 'A' Division with 63 points and three top five finishes. 
  • First years Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey) and Tamsin Horne (Broomfield. Colo.) finished third in the 'B' Division as they collected two wins and a second-place finish. 

BOSTON DINGHY CUP FLEET RACE | CAMBRIDGE, Mass. | 8th of 10 

  • The Engineers finished in eighth with 174 total points. 
  • The 'A' Division boat of senior Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.) and senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) took fourth with 39 points. Out of the nine races, they earned four top three finishes including one win. 
  • In the 'B' Division, sophomore Emma Wang (McLean, Va.) and first year Christine Keedy Brown (Miami, Fla.) finished in ninth with 71 points.  
  • The 'C' Division boat with first year Sophia Woodbury (Sarasota, Fla.) finished with 64 points. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will compete at the Women's Team Race Nationals, April 27-28 at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
