Men's Track and Field Claims 20th NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Smith College Outdoor Track (Northampton, Mass.)
 
- The Lead: On Saturday afternoon at Smith College, the No. 25 ranked MIT men's track and field team claimed its 20th all-time NEWMAC Championship as the Engineers finished with 246.5 points and defeated WPI by a 45-point margin. Overall, MIT had 10 First Team All-Conference performances and eight Second Team finishers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Senior Nathan Basinger (Dalton, Ohio) was a three-time champion on Saturday to lead the Engineers as he won the shot put, discus and hammer throw. He took the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 6.25 inches, along with 148 feet, eight inches in the discus and 176 feet, two inches in the hammer throw.
 
- Senior William Woltmann (Secaucus, N.J.) earned Second Team All-Conference honors in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 3.5 inches to finish second. He also placed third in the hammer as he posted a distance of 153 feet, three inches. Junior Henry Sobieszczyk (Newton, Mass.) scored in both the shot put and the hammer throw as he was fourth in the shot (45 feet, 11.25 inches) and sixth in the hammer (127 feet, one inch).
 
- Junior Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) took the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 10 inches and finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.32 seconds. His hurdle time is the fastest in MIT history and currently ranks him third nationally. First-year Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.90 seconds as his prelim time of 14.46 seconds is fifth in the country and third all-time at MIT. He also claimed the 400-meter hurdle NEWMAC title as he finished in 55.34 seconds. In addition, the other scorer in the long jump was sophomore Spencer Yandrofski (Chapel Hill, N.C.) as he finished in fifth with a leap of 21 feet, 5.25 inches.
 
- Junior Matthew Kearney (Austin, Texas) led a sweep of the top three spots in the 5,000 meters as he won in a time of 14:53.59. Senior Nicholas Medearis (Palo Alto, Calif.) was second in 14:57.05, followed by junior Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) in third at 15:09.87. The Engineers also took the top two spots in the 10,000 meters with sophomore Raymond Brookman (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and sophomore Jacob Hansen (Bountiful, Utah). Brookman earned the win in 31:32.21 and Hansen followed very closely behind in 31:33.24.
 
- MIT also swept the top three positions in the pole vault, led by senior Everett Brandyberry (Hill City, Kan.) and his winning height of 14 feet, 7.25 inches. First-year Luka Srsic (Worthington, Ohio) finished second with an identical height to go along with junior Bryan Sperry (San Diego, Calif.) in third at 14 feet, 1.25 inches. The Engineers had two scorers in the high jump with Yandrofski finishing second at six feet, 2.75 inches and junior Steven Marquez (El Centro, Calif.) tying for fourth at five feet, 10.75 inches.
 
- First-year Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.) captured the 400-meter title with a time of 48.98 seconds, followed in second by graduate student Benton Wilson (Dublin, Ohio) in 49.53. Koe was also fourth in the 200 as he crossed in 22.49 seconds. Koe and Wilson, along with junior Jeremiah Budiman (Plano, Texas) and junior McKinley Polen (Los Altos, Calif.), finished second in the 4x100 relay as the group ran a time of 41.60 seconds. In the 4x400 relay, the team of junior Evan Schaefer (Frederick, Md.), Benton Wilson, senior Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.) and senior Matt Schofield (Shorewood, Ill.) won the event in a time of 3:19.27.
 
- Budiman and Polen scored in the 100 meters in fourth and sixth place, respectively. Budiman ran a time of 10.92 seconds, with Polen right behind at 10.93.
 
- In the 1,500 meters, Ryan Wilson led MIT in third at 4:01.89. First-year Samir Amin (Olympia, Wash.) placed fourth with a time of 4:03.20, while first-year Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) was fifth at 4:06.98. In the 800, Schofield crossed in third at 1:54.70 and was followed by first-year Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.) in fifth at 1:56.27. Junior Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he crossed in 9:49.66.
