The Lead: No. 17 MIT picked up a hard-fought 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 victory over Springfield College in a NEWMAC women's volleyball match on Tuesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: Springfield built a 9-5 lead but a serving error sparked an 8-1 run that put MIT ahead for good. A serving error and a kill brought the Pride within 13-12, however, a kill from junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) kicked off a string of seven unanswered points. The Engineers maintained their small cushion before winning the set, 25-17, on a kill by sophomore
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.).
Â
-
Set 2: Trailing 6-5, a kill by Gragg ignited a 15-3 run which resulted in a comfortable advantage. An exchange of points followed until a serving error and a kill from Gragg gave MIT set point at 24-12. A hitting error extended the frame but Gragg replied with another kill to capture the win.
Â
-
Set 3: The third set was a back-and-forth affair as there were 11 ties and five lead changes. A Springfield hitting error set off a 6-0 run which gave the Engineers a 21-16 lead. The Pride capitalized on a kill and two hitting errors to stay within striking distance. However, MIT won three of the next four points as a kill by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) resulted in match point at 24-20. A kill and a hitting error kept Springfield alive but the late rally was thwarted due to a serving error.
