The Lead: A balanced attack as well as an efficient hitting performance helped No. 18 MIT defeat Mount Holyoke College, 25-6, 25-18, 25-16, in a NEWMAC women's volleyball match on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: Tied at three, a kill by junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) kicked off a four-point burst. The Engineers continued to pull away as a nine-point serving run from senior
Sofie Kupiec (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at the end of the set helped MIT register a comfortable 25-6 win.
-
Set 2: Mount Holyoke established an 8-3 advantage after a kill. A serving error sparked an 8-1 run by the Engineers; however, the Lyons went back in front (14-13) courtesy of an ace. MIT responded with a kill by first-year
Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) which ignited an 11-2 run as a block by first-year
Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) resulted in set point. A pair of errors extended the frame for Mount Holyoke, but a kill by Gibbs thwarted the comeback attempt.
-
Set 3: After a back-and-forth start to the set, the Engineers inched out to a 9-5 lead. The Lyons won four out of the next five points, but a kill from first-year
Paige Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) along with two Mount Holyoke miscues gave MIT some breathing room. A kill helped the Lyons narrow the gap to 13-10, however, the Engineers put together a 6-2 spurt as they eventually won the set, 25-16.
