Sport Shorts Spotlight: MIT Field Hockey Snaps Babson’s Historic Winning Streak, Takes Sole Possession of First Place in NEWMAC
The MIT field hockey team delivered a historic week, earning back-to-back shutout victories over No. 9 Babson College and Salve Regina University to improve to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in NEWMAC play. On Tuesday, Audrey Oh scored the game’s lone goal in the third quarter to lift the Engineers to a 1-0 upset of nationally ranked Babson, marking MIT’s first victory over the Beavers since the 2019 NEWMAC Championship. The win also snapped Babson’s remarkable 80-game NEWMAC regular-season winning streak, which dated back to 2015. The Engineers carried that momentum into Saturday’s matchup at Salve Regina, where Ingrid Tomovski and Meredith Wu each found the back of the cage in a commanding 2-0 victory. Goalkeeper Alexia Ninios anchored MIT’s defense throughout the week, recording consecutive shutouts and bringing her season total to six, tied for sixth in program history. With the two victories, MIT stands as the only undefeated team in NEWMAC play, positioning the Engineers atop the conference standings.
